Beginning of Legacy...

Juan and Kisha Webster have always had a natural gift for relating to people. When they met in 2012. Neither of them had an idea LACC was in their path. Juan would always say, “ despite all there is to gain, my desire is to leave a legacy that will continue to better the lives of others.” Kisha hadn’t yet thought of leaving a legacy, but fell in love with that idea immediately.

Over the years, Juan and Kisha shared a gift of hospitality. Juan’s interest in hospitality originated from entertainment. Kisha’s interest in hospitality originated from feeding people. She loved bringing people together for food and laughter. In December 2012, after many calls around to local shelters there were no call backs. This was frustrating to Juan and Kisha. They were puzzled how with all the homelessness in America, how can there be a lack of opportunities to get involved with an existing organization in their local community. Kisha prayed.

That prayer unlocked the seed of LACC. A non-profit that exists to “Love as Christ Commands.” LACC performs the act of giving pure love without judgement to those in need. It is their desire to see LACC operating with a global footprint to love, meet, and exceed the basic demands for living.

LACC Story about Homeless guy Transitioning (Image not included)

For the past few years I have built a rapport with my friend pictured. He has volunteered to help us unload, clean up and reload. He has been a pleasant face to greet us each time upon arrival in the park to deliver meals to the homeless and less fortunate. His attitude and spirit has always been positive, polite and energetic. He laughs and makes sure he gives genuine, heart-felt appreciation each and every time, especially after his second and third plate. Lol. My point is, he is a very happy guy and has yet to make excuses for his current situation. We get a hearty farewell and he always wants to take pictures, which may be surprising considering the most common and understood gesture most of the time is dismissed. This guy has made himself a part of the LACC Family and we have had the pleasure of making sure he is treated as such. Well today something changed. Something life changing happened to him, so naturally, after building and developing a relationship with him, something life changing happened to me because he is family and you get connected to family matters. I have never called him by name, in fact, I may not even know his real name, but what I do know is that today he shared his blessing with me. As my colleagues and I passed by Lombard Street headed to lunch, we got caught at the traffic light. I looked over to my left and noticed my friend. I asked the driver to put the window down. I called out, "aye my friend". He didn't respond. I repeated, "aye my friend." He turned and looked into the vehicle and immediately said, "Hey Bruh. I missed y'all this weekend. " He was referring to this past Saturday's Homeless Outreach Mission where the meal we served consisted of Barbeque Chicken, Potato Salad, Green Beans and Carrots. See my friend always enjoys the food. So much that he may get a few additional plates if we have any remaining and of course if everyone has been served. After discussing the fact that we missed him on Saturday, he proceeded to share his great news. "Man I got housing now! I have a place to live. It's section 8 and I'm just thankful." Immediately he saw the reaction of my team and I. We celebrated, honked the horn and sang a song. We literally celebrated at an intersection. I was so happy for my friend. I reminded him that this was in deed a blessing and he deserved to have a home to go to each night. I added that now maybe there would be some chicken left on Saturdays for other people to enjoy. He laughed and replied, "I have housing now but I'm still coming to get some of that chicken until I get on my feet. I will be there the next time you all come out. I love y'all brother." I replied with a laugh, smile and overjoyed heart, I love you too my friend. See you March 5th". I wish I could really explain how great it feels to celebrate someone else. I don't think we, The LACC Foundation, had anything to do with his journey to getting permanent housing; however, I was reminded that if you are faithful over a few things, God will make you ruler over many. This has been the highlight of my week and I deemed it share worthy. Please excuse the length, but I hope you find a blessing in the story! In my friend's eyes, he experienced a MIRACLE. To know someone that can go from sleeping on park benches to having their own keys is enough to encourage the world, especially if you are down. Best News I heard all week! A special day for my friend. Passed him on the street and learned he officially has housing. The little things we take for granted. From sleeping on park benches to having his own keys, I can only rejoice. We had nothing to do with this transition into permanent housing, but God had everything to do with this specific blessing.
